Grammy-nominated artiste and United Nations Ambassador, Rocky Dawuni, is urging Ghanaians to take immediate action against the destructive practice of illegal mining, commonly known as Galamsey.
In an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, Rocky Dawuni expressed deep concern about the devastating impact of Galamsey on the country’s natural resources.
He emphasized the importance of protecting water bodies and highlighted the global concern surrounding the issue.
As an ambassador for the environment, for the United Nations, and for Africa, Rocky Dawuni pointed out that he is often approached by representatives from other countries seeking answers on the issue of Galamsey.
He underscored the long-term environmental and health consequences of illegal mining, warning of the lasting damage being caused to the country.
The reggae icon stressed the urgency of taking action to stop Galamsey, as it not only robs the future and destroys livelihoods but also introduces toxic substances like cyanide and mercury into the food chain and waterways.
He emphasized the interconnectedness of all living beings and the importance of safeguarding the water supply from harmful pollutants.
Rocky Dawuni’s call to action aligns with that of other influential figures, including the Trades Union Congress (TUC), which has threatened to hold demonstrations and a nationwide strike if the government does not decisively address illegal mining by the end of September.
It is crucial for all Ghanaians to come together and prioritize the protection of our natural resources for the well-being of present and future generations.
