The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network, in partnership with the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development, Africtivistes, Awo Hub, and Yiaga Africa, has introduced a new initiative called ‘Democreatives.’ This program, launched in Lagos, Nigeria, on June 21, 2024, aims to harness the influence and resources of creatives in the West Africa sub-region to advocate for and uphold democracy.
The event brought together creatives from various countries in the sub-region to brainstorm ideas on how they can amplify activism for democratic awareness. Notable figures in attendance included playwright and poet, Chief Moomen from Ghana, rapper MI Abaga from Nigeria, rapper Sister LB from Senegal, artist and journalist Ben Osar Youssouf Barry from Senegal, and Yemi Adamolekun from Nigeria. The panel discussion was moderated by Cynthia Mbamalu from Yiaga Africa.
During the event, DJ Switch, a key figure in the #EndSars movement in Nigeria, emphasized the role of creatives in promoting democratic consciousness. Grammy-nominated artist Rocky Dawuni from Ghana also encouraged individuals in the culture and creative industries to actively participate in democratic activities for the benefit of citizens.
Dr. Kojo Pumpuni Asante, the Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at CDD-Ghana, emphasized the importance of utilizing creatives to advance democracy in Africa. He highlighted the governance challenges on the continent and stressed the need for creatives to raise their voices and address these issues through their art.
The launch of Democreatives is seen as the beginning of a movement that will involve workshops, campaigns, forums, and concerts to engage creatives and activists in promoting civic issues. The initiative aims to deepen the understanding of the role of creatives in West Africa and leverage their talents for the consolidation of democracy and the promotion of democratic values.
Overall, the event showcased the potential of creatives in driving social change and advocating for good governance in the region. Through their art and influence, creatives have the power to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and inspire positive societal change. It is hoped that initiatives like Democreatives will foster collaboration between creatives and democracy champions to promote citizen mobilization and accountable governance in West Africa.
