Twenty years after Usher’s ‘Confessions’ album made fans question his past relationships, the R&B sensation has finally broken his silence.

In an exclusive cover story with People, the artist opened up about the album and admitted that there is “a great deal of truth” in the music.

Usher revealed that he reached out to multiple male friends in the industry to come up with the lyrics, meaning that the album’s lyrics reflect not only his own truth, but the combined truths of others as well.

While there is no doubt that parts of the album are based on Usher’s own personal life, he chose not to reveal which relationship the album was reflecting.

However, Usher did share that the album was inspired by a conversation with his publicist, Chris Chambers, who challenged him to think about his identity and what people really knew about him.

The artist added that he had always felt judged for being a vulnerable, Black man before creating ‘Confessions.’ ‘Confessions’ was Usher’s way of breaking the barriers and dealing with the criticisms often faced by Black men when being vulnerable.

Notably, Usher was romantically linked to rapper Chilli at the time of the album’s release but she refuted that the songs most evidently about infidelity were not based on their relationship.
