Tyla, the South African singer and songwriter, is standing up to her critics after a controversial moment at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
The 22-year-old artist won the award for best Afrobeat for her hit single “Water.” During the awards ceremony, she was joined on stage by Halle Bailey and Lil Nas X, who presented her with the trophy.
However, the moment took a turn when Tyla jokingly asked Halle Bailey and Lil Nas X to hold her award because she claimed it was too heavy for her. This led to backlash on social media, with many users criticizing her for the request.
Tyla later clarified the situation on social media, stating that she never actually asked Halle Bailey to hold her award and attributing the misunderstanding to people making things “weird.”
This incident comes after Tyla’s recent success at the BET Awards, where she took home wins for Best New Artist and Best International Act.
She also made a splash at the Met Gala earlier this year, debuting a diamond-dripped manicure that perfectly complemented her Balmain gown.
