The Hollywood Reporter’s Lovia Gyarkye has received a National Magazine Award from the American Society of Magazine Editors.
Gyarkye, a critique of arts and culture at THR, is the recipient of one of the ASME NEXT Awards for Journalists Under 30. This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of early-career print and digital journalists.
In addition to Gyarkye, other recipients of the ninth annual awards include Rebecca Alter from Vulture, Haley Kluge from Variety, Isabela Quintero from New York Magazine, and Zeyi Yang from MIT Technology Review.
The National Magazine Awards, also known as “Ellies,” are considered highly prestigious in digital and print journalism. The finalists were recently announced, and the winners will be honored at a ceremony on April 2 at Terminal 5 in Manhattan.
Over 250 magazines and websites entered the National Magazine Awards and ASME Awards this year, with more than 300 editors, photo editors, and art directors serving as judges.
This is the ninth time that THR has been nominated for a National Magazine Award. Having scored its first-ever nomination in 2014, THR went on to win the General Excellence, Special Interest category in both 2015 and 2016. It also earned Magazine of the Year nominations in these years. THR was nominated again in 2017, 2019, 2020 when it also won the award, and in 2022. Christian Cody’s photo of Lupita Nyong’o for a THR cover story was also nominated for best news and entertainment photograph in the previous year.
The Ellie awards, established in 1966 by ASME in association with the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, were initially limited to print magazines but now recognize high-quality journalism published in any medium.
