Ghanaian highlife sensation, Kwabena Kwabena, has sparked a debate regarding the existence of record labels in Ghana.
In a recent interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie, the ‘Adult Music’ hitmaker expressed skepticism about the presence of record labels in the Ghanaian music industry.
When asked if he would consider signing with a Ghanaian record label under favorable conditions, Kwabena Kwabena responded, “Are there record labels in Ghana?” He firmly stated, “No, no, no. I am sorry, there is no record label in Ghana.”
This sentiment is shared by many who believe that the music companies labeled as record labels in Ghana are more focused on music management and promotional activities rather than traditional record label functions.
Kwabena Kwabena emphasized that most of these entities offer label services without fully embodying the essence of a record label.
Despite the ongoing debate, some argue that the size of a record label does not determine its effectiveness, as businesses worldwide vary in size but often perform similar functions.
Known music companies in Ghana such as RuffTown Records, Highly Spiritual Music, Lynx Entertainment, Black Avenue Musik, and others have been cited as examples of potential record labels.
