The 2024 Chale Wote Street Art Festival in Ghana has been more than just a display of art forms, it has also fostered conversations on arts and culture.

One of the highlights of the festival was a Talk Party held on Day 4, where participating artists shared their thoughts on various topics such as the African definition of art, the concept of hope, and strategies for claiming space in urban environments.

During the event, Eli Asem, a weaver from Agotime Kpetoe, showcased the intricate techniques of kente weaving and explained the meanings behind the symbols embedded in the designs.

He emphasized that kente weaving is an ancestral craft passed down through generations, carrying profound messages that are revealed only to those with a pure heart.

The festival, which began on August 19, 2024, featured a range of activities. On the third day, the Denyigba Borborbor Group wowed the audience with a captivating Borborbor performance, showcasing the political, spiritual, and sensual dimensions of their culture.

Additionally, Asafoatse Atanarh of Osu Ashantey led a knowledge-sharing session on ancient warfare strategies and weapons.

The festival also included sessions on the evolution of hip-hop in Ghana, film screenings, and discussions on topics like reverse aid-giving and caring for loved ones with terminal illnesses.

The event aimed to explore the history of the Gulf of Guinea through art and entertainment, focusing on counterhegemonic narratives and the rebirth of sacred sciences long forgotten and buried with the giants.

Organized by Accra [dot] ALT in collaboration with Redd Kat Pictures and Chale Wote Street Art Projekt, the one-week-long festival will come to a close on Sunday, August 25, 2024.
