Rapper Gambo discusses US tour and Afrobeats success on VOA

Ghanaian rapper Gambo, best known for his chart-topping song Drip, recently made a visit to the Voice of America (VOA) studios in Washington D.C. During his time at VOA, Gambo sat down with reporter Mike Hove to talk about his current tour in the United States and the journey he’s been on in pursuit of the “American dream.”

Having been on tour for several months now, Gambo shared some insights into his experiences in the U.S., emphasizing key moments in his music career. One of the highlights he mentioned was his unforgettable meeting with hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg back in February 2024. This encounter took place in Los Angeles during the African pre-Grammy Awards Global Affairs event.

Reflecting on his meeting with Snoop Dogg, Gambo described the iconic rapper as having a warm and welcoming personality that instantly put him at ease. He also revealed that he is currently working on an Afrobeats album and talked about the success of his Drip Remix featuring American rapper Jim Jones, which showcased African culture.

In addition to discussing his interactions with international stars, Gambo took a moment to pay tribute to the trailblazers of Afrobeats who have paved the way for younger artists like himself. He acknowledged the global excitement surrounding the genre, describing Afrobeats as vibrant and capable of bringing joy to people through its music.

Touching on the importance of collaboration within the African music industry, Gambo stressed the need for unity in promoting African music and culture on a global scale. “This is the time we need to push, support each other, and push our culture to the world,” he emphasized.

During the interview, Gambo also talked about some of his notable collaborations, citing his work with Nigerian artist Goya Menor on the track Cut Soap as his biggest African collaboration to date. He also mentioned successful partnerships with Nigerian singer Lade on Nobody and Tanzanian artist Young Daresalama on Sio Simple.

Before wrapping up the interview, Gambo expressed gratitude towards actor and comedian Michael Blackson for his support in connecting him with influential figures in the U.S. music industry, such as Jim Jones. These connections have played a significant role in enhancing Gambo’s presence on the international music scene.
