Olam Agri Ghana, a leading agri-business focusing on food, feed, and fiber, has kicked off the third edition of its Healthy Baker initiative. This program is designed to improve the health and well-being of bakers across Ghana while promoting food safety in the communities they serve.
The campaign started in the Western Region towns of Takoradi and Aboadze, targeting more than 7,500 bakers nationwide. Soumya Saxena, the Business Head of Olam Agri’s Grains Business in Ghana, expressed pride in expanding the Healthy Baker initiative this year. By including breast cancer screenings in the health assessments, the program aims to proactively ensure the bakers’ well-being.
This initiative is part of Olam Agri’s broader efforts to support bakers in Africa. It focuses on educating and monitoring hygiene standards and compliance protocols in selected bakeries throughout Ghana. In addition to monitoring vital health conditions like Hepatitis B and high blood pressure, this year’s program introduces breast cancer screenings to enhance public health awareness.
The screening exercises will be carried out in partnership with Twentieth Consult and the Regional Coordination Councils to ensure comprehensive health evaluations for the bakers. Participants will also receive education on good hygiene practices to maintain optimal food safety standards in their bakeries.
Bakers who pass the health screening checks will be issued food handling certificates by local authorities, certifying their suitability to handle food. Since its launch in 2022, the Healthy Baker initiative has conducted over 15 health screening drives, benefiting more than 5,000 bakers in various regions such as Tema, Ashaiman, Accra, and Kumasi.
