The Deputy Director of the National Commission on Culture (NCC), Dr. Richardson Commey Fio, has strongly criticized the increasing trend of male content creators in Ghana engaging in cross-dressing.
He described this practice as a direct challenge to the country’s cultural and moral values.
Expressing concern over the rise of male influencers donning female attire for content creation purposes, Dr. Fio highlighted a recent incident at the Ridge Condos All Black Party in Kumasi.
Several male content creators attended the event wearing women’s clothing, sparking outrage from the NCC.
Dr. Fio emphasized the importance of upholding Ghanaian culture, especially in a city like Kumasi, known for its rich cultural heritage.
He condemned the actions of the cross-dressers, labeling it as disrespectful to the country’s traditions and cultural custodians.
In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Dr. Fio lamented the disturbing trend of cross-dressing in the name of entertainment.
He criticized individuals who use globalization and modernity as excuses to undermine Ghanaian cultural values.
Despite the NCC’s stance, not everyone agrees with their perspective.
In a GTV interview, male content creator Deaconess Abokoma, also known as Ebenezer Arthur, defended cross-dressing as a form of entertainment rather than a reflection of one’s sexual orientation.
Dr. Fio acknowledged that the NCC currently lacks legal authority to directly address such practices.
He mentioned ongoing efforts to amend the law governing the Commission, which would grant them more power to intervene in similar situations.
While advocating for cultural evolution, Dr. Fio stressed the importance of preserving Ghana’s unique identity and values.
He urged vigilance in protecting these traits from compromise, emphasizing the need for collective action to safeguard the country’s cultural heritage.
