In a recent interview with Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z program, Okyeame Kwame, also known as OK, shared details about his father’s initial fear of him pursuing a career in music.
The rap star disclosed that his father was concerned that becoming a musician might lead him down a path of drug use and addiction.
According to Okyeame Kwame, the tension between him and his father started when he was 14 and continued until he turned 21.
It was at that point that his father reluctantly permitted him to pursue his music dreams, realizing that there was no convincing him to abandon his passion for music.
However, the permission was not without conditions. Okyeame Kwame explained that his father made him promise to stay away from drugs and to obtain his first degree.
This negotiation was a result of his father’s legitimate concerns about the music industry, where drugs are often presented as a coping mechanism for performers dealing with stage fright.
The Woso hitmaker expressed disappointment in the fact that young musicians are often encouraged to use drugs to enhance their performances, citing personal experiences of being offered drugs numerous times to boost his own shows.
He emphasized the importance of resisting the pressure, sharing that he constantly heard his father’s voice guiding him to make the right choices.
Okyeame Kwame also raised concerns about the influence of handlers and industry professionals who push wild ideas and dangerous behaviors onto young artists, using the success stories of drug-using musicians to promote the use of drugs within the industry.
Okyeame Kwame’s revelations shed light on the challenges and pressures faced by aspiring musicians, as well as the importance of parental guidance and values in helping them stay on the right track.
