The Musicians Union of Ghana is mourning the loss of Naa Amanua, a lead vocalist of the Ga traditional music group, who passed away on December 16, 2024.
In a statement released by the union, Naa Amanua was honored for her contribution to preserving and promoting Ghanaian traditional music, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s cultural heritage.
Described as one of Ghana’s most beloved traditional singers, Naa Amanua’s melodious voice and evocative renditions brought Ga folk music to national and international acclaim.
As a founding member of the legendary Wulomei group, she played a crucial role in reviving indigenous rhythms by blending traditional instruments with modern influences, creating a unique and captivating sound. Some of her well-known songs include Meridian, Akosua Serwaa, Akrowa, and Menyemenye.
In recognition of her lifelong dedication to music, Naa Amanua received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2018 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards. She was also actively involved in the Ageing Musicians Welfare Fund (AMWeF) of MUSIGA, showcasing her commitment to supporting fellow musicians.
The statement from MUSIGA further described Naa Amanua as not just a singer, but a storyteller, cultural ambassador, and a source of pride for Ghana. Her performances were said to transport audiences to the roots of Ghanaian traditions, embodying the spirit of the people and their connection to the past.
