More music leaving TikTok over Universal Music row; Harry Styles and Adele affected

TikTok is currently in the midst of a dispute with Universal Music Group (UMG) over royalty payments, leading to the removal of songs by artists signed to the label.

The platform is now extending this action to include songs by writers associated with UMG, potentially affecting popular artists like Harry Styles and Adele.

According to TikTok, as much as 30% of “popular songs” may be removed, while industry estimates suggest up to 80% of all music on the platform could be muted. This is due to the concept of “split copyrights,” where any song involving a Universal-signed songwriter, even in a minor capacity, could be taken down.

The licensing agreement between Universal and TikTok expired earlier this year, prompting the removal of the label’s recording catalogue containing around three million songs in February. The publishing catalogue deal is set to expire soon, resulting in the removal of another four million songs from the platform.

UMG has accused TikTok of offering lower rates compared to other platforms, claiming that only 1% of their total revenue comes from TikTok despite its large user base. TikTok, on the other hand, disputes this narrative and insists on fair dealings.

Music plays a significant role on TikTok, with many content creators incorporating songs into their videos. The platform has also served as a launchpad for artists to gain recognition and grow their fan base. However, the ongoing dispute raises concerns for artists who rely on TikTok for exposure and success.

The row over royalties has sparked debates about the impact on artists, with some like Kim Petras expressing support for Universal’s stance. Despite the challenges faced by artists, including muted music on TikTok, there are hopes for a resolution that benefits all parties involved.
