Hollywood actor Michael Sheen has made headlines for his philanthropic efforts, writing off £1m-worth of people’s debts with £100,000 of his own money. Sheen, known for his roles in films such as Frost/Nixon and The Damned United, started a debt acquisition company to help 900 people in South Wales.
The initiative has been featured in a new Channel 4 show called “Michael Sheen’s Secret Million Pound Giveaway”, which is set to air next week. The show aims to shed light on how banks and finance companies profit from society’s most vulnerable individuals.
Sheen, who declared himself a “not-for-profit” actor in 2021, has been actively involved in charitable endeavors. Earlier this year, he announced funding for a new theatre company to fill the void left by the closure of National Theatre Wales.
Despite initial doubts, Sheen was inspired to continue his debt relief project after hearing the stories of steelworkers losing their jobs in Port Talbot. The closure of the town’s last blast furnace marked the end of traditional steelmaking in South Wales.
Sheen’s generosity and commitment to social causes have garnered praise from many. Through his efforts, he has helped 900 individuals in South Wales alleviate the burden of debt. He emphasized the importance of checking accounts to ensure that debts have been paid off, acknowledging the stigma surrounding discussions about money.
The documentary showcasing Sheen’s philanthropic work will air on Channel 4 on March 10, providing insight into the process and impact of his debt relief efforts.
