A cast member who waved a Palestinian flag with the word “GAZA” in protest during Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show will not face charges, according to New Orleans police.
The flag, which also featured the word SUDAN, combined the black stripes of the flags honoured by the Sudanese and Palestinian peoples.
The cast member, part of a group of dancers dressed in matching black sweats, raised the flag on the car roof at the centre of the hip-hop artist’s performance.
After jumping off the stage and running across the field, the individual was tackled by several men in suits. The NFL stated that the flag was hidden and no one involved in the production was aware of the person’s intent.
As a result, the individual has been banned for life from league stadiums and events. Roc Nation, the entertainment company behind the halftime show, confirmed that the flag display was not planned.
President Donald Trump, who was present at the game, may not have witnessed the protest.
His statement about his government’s intention to purchase and own Gaza has been strongly opposed by the Palestinian people, disrupting discussions about the enclave’s future.
