Renowned gospel musicians, Great Ampong and Nicolas Omane Acheampong, lent their voices to the demonstration against the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on February 14, 2024.

Both musicians highlighted the close relationship between sports and music, emphasizing the role of music as a source of motivation for footballers. Great Ampong expressed concern about the current state of affairs in Ghanaian football, particularly criticizing the selection process for the national team and the performance of the Black Stars.

In an interview with Adom News, Great Ampong stated, “sports flows with music, that is why most athletes listen to music ahead of their games to motivate themselves. It’s another reason why Ghana has ‘jama’ groups to cheer players at these tournaments like AFCON.”

He also expressed disappointment in the performance of the GFA President, Kurt Okraku, stating that the selection process for players is negatively impacting the Black Stars team.

They called on the government of Ghana to investigate the issues in Ghanaian football, attributing problems to the administration led by Kurt Okraku rather than the government.

The ‘Save Ghana Football’ protest aimed to push for reforms in the governance of Ghana football, and was led by sports journalists Saddick Adams, popularly known as Sports Obama, Veronica Commey, and Patrick Osei Agyemang.

The demonstrators marched through Asylum Down, the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and ultimately to the Ghana Football Association headquarters.

The demonstration was fueled by the disappointing performance of the senior national team, the Black Stars, at the 34th Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast.

The supporters and participants at the protest were hopeful that their efforts would bring about necessary changes and reforms within the country’s football infrastructure.
