Daddy Bosco, a Board Member of Ghana Reggae Dancehall Awards, has spoken out against negative perceptions of dancehall music in a recent interview.

He refuted claims by highlife musician Michael Adangba that dancehall music encourages hooliganism among Ghana’s youth.

Bosco defended the genre, stating that those who criticize dancehall music often do not fully understand its true nature.

He pointed out that dancehall music often advocates for social justice and sheds light on the struggles of marginalized communities. Instead of hastily condemning the genre, Bosco encouraged a deeper understanding of its cultural and social significance.

In response to Adangba’s concerns about the lyrical content of dancehall promoting rebellion and violence, Bosco acknowledged that there may be individuals within the genre who behave irresponsibly.

However, he emphasized that these individuals do not represent the values and core message of dancehall music as a whole.

Furthermore, Bosco highlighted that pockets of misbehavior exist in other music genres as well, but those incidents do not result in the entire genre being labeled negatively.

He emphasized that attributing inherent problems to dancehall music is misguided and undermines the positive and socially conscious messages that much of the music conveys.

The dancehall genre in Ghana has seen significant growth over the years, producing talented artists such as Root Eye, Shatta Rako, Sonni Balli, and many more.
