According to Sadiq, Live FM first introduced the concept of December in GH in 2016, challenging the Ghana Tourism Authority’s assertion that it was launched in August 2019.
This has ignited a debate on social media, with notable figures like George Quaye, KOD, and Mike Cooke weighing in on the matter.
Mike Cooke, a former Live FM presenter, clarified that the concept of “December in Ghana” was actually initiated by Vibe FM and Akwaaba UK as far back as 1998.
They organized events such as the December Carnival and parties at popular venues like Boomerang, laying the foundation for the festive atmosphere that Ghana experiences in December.
The momentum continued to build over the years, leading to the formation of a committee by former Tourism Minister Jake Obetsebi Lamptey to attract the diaspora market.
This eventually evolved into what we now know as The Joseph Project, which aimed to reconnect the African diaspora with their roots and promote Ghana’s rich cultural heritage.
The Year of Return in 2019 can be seen as a rebranded version of The Joseph Project, attracting thousands of visitors from the diaspora and boosting tourism in Ghana.
Hon-Catherine Abelema Afeku and Akwasi Agyeman played key roles in the success of the initiative, ensuring it was well-publicized and executed effectively.
The transformation of December in Ghana into a vibrant party destination can be attributed to strategic initiatives launched under the NPP government, particularly the “Year of Return.”
