The Berlinale Spotlight Screening is set to make its debut in Ghana and on the African continent from November 13 to 17, 2024. This event, organized in collaboration with the GIZ, the Goethe Institute, UniMac-IFT, and GAFTA, aims to showcase and support African filmmakers and films.
Berlinale is renowned as one of the top 5 A-list film festivals globally, alongside Cannes, Venice, Toronto, and Sundance. The motivation behind the Berlinale Spotlight Screening in Accra is to promote and empower African films and filmmakers on the continent, attract more film submissions, and reintroduce these films to African audiences.
This inaugural edition will feature a selection of seven films, including “Who do I belong to?” from Tunisia and Canada, “Dahomey” from Benin and France, “The Nights Still Smell of gun powder” from Mozambique and Germany, “Black Tea” from Taiwan, Cote D’Ivoire, Cape Verde, and China, and “Disco Afrika” from Madagascar and Germany.
Additionally, “Certain Winds from the South” from Ghana and “Letter from my Village” from Senegal will be showcased.
These films touch on a variety of themes, such as identity, corruption, post-colonial struggles, gender roles, migration, and cultural heritage. Panel discussions on these themes will also be held during the event.
The screening venues for the Berlinale Spotlight Screening in Accra include the NAFTI hostel, the NAFTI Studio, and the Goethe Institute. More details on the event will be provided in the coming days.
