Highlife star Akwaboah, in a recent interview on Accra 100.5 FM’s midmorning show, Ayekoo Ayekoo, shared that he did not vote in the 2020 general elections.

His reason for abstaining from the election was due to his weariness of political promises that are often unfulfilled once candidates come into power.

Akwaboah expressed his frustration with the misuse of government funds by those in power and noted that promises made during political campaigns, such as those related to tax incentives and new streaming platforms for the creative arts sector, are often tactics to gain attention from voters in that sector.

He also highlighted the tendency for unlettered voters to be swayed by such promises and the lack of critical questioning of political leaders’ ideas and utterances.

The singer-songwriter criticized the electorate’s tendency to base voting decisions on factors such as English proficiency, charisma, and kinship, ethnic, and tribal lines, rather than focusing on the honesty and actions of the candidates once in power. He emphasized the importance of honesty and fulfillment of promises from political leaders.

When asked if he plans to vote in the upcoming elections, Akwaboah firmly stated that he has no intention of participating in the electoral process, as he also abstained from voting in the 2020 elections. Ultimately, his hope is for honesty from political leaders, regardless of their political affiliations.

It is clear that Akwaboah’s decision not to vote is rooted in his disillusionment with the political landscape and his desire for accountable and honest leadership in Ghana. As a prominent figure in the music industry, his views shed light on the sentiments of many Ghanaians who are disenchanted with the current state of politics in the country.
