EC Comics was a popular bad boy of comic publishers in the early 1950s. Despite selling millions of copies of their comics, they also drew scrutiny and backlash for their shocking, horrifying, and progressive stories. However, after the creation of the self-regulatory Comics Code Authority, the infamous comics company is making a comeback with a brand new line of comics.
Oni Press, in partnership with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., has announced a brand new line of EC Comics stories with A-list comics creators beginning this summer. The first book from the new line will be “Epitaphs From the Abyss,” a horror title debuting in July, followed by sci-fi comic “Cruel Universe” in August. The new comics will feature an anthology format, with creative teams rotating in and out.
Some of the creators involved in the project include writers like Jason Aaron, Brian Azzarello, and artists such as Kano, Peter Krause, and Leomacs, among others. Oni’s publisher, Hunter Gorinson, expressed the aim of keeping the relentless energy and fearless sensibilities of EC Comics while evolving to suit the current intense times.
EC Comics’ artistry left a long-lasting impression, influencing filmmakers and authors alike. Oni Press hopes to make the new comics just as relevant and influential as the original stories from 70 years ago.
