Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has added another feather to her cap by winning the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards. This prestigious event took place on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
This isn’t the first time Tems has made a big splash at the Grammy Awards. In 2023, she clinched her first Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for her work on Future’s hit track “Wait For You”, which also featured Drake.
During this year’s ceremony, Tems took home the Best African Music Performance award for her song “Love Me JeJe”, a track that has resonated with fans across the continent. This win solidifies her status as one of the top talents in the African music industry.
In her acceptance speech, Tems gave thanks to her fans and supporters, as well as her team who have been instrumental in her success. She also dedicated the award to her mother, whose birthday fell on the day after the ceremony, making the win even more special.
The Best African Music Performance category at the Grammy Awards highlights recordings that showcase the diverse and rich musical traditions of the African continent. It includes genres such as Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, and many others.
Aside from Tems, other nominees in the category included Yemi Alade, Asake & Wizkid, Chris Brown featuring Davido & Lojay, and Burna Boy. The competition was stiff, but Tems emerged victorious with her soulful and captivating performance.
The 2025 Grammy Awards were also dedicated to raising funds for MusiCares Fire Relief, a campaign aimed at supporting those affected by recent wildfires in the Greater Los Angeles Area. This initiative demonstrates the music industry’s commitment to giving back to communities in need.
