At the highly-anticipated launch event of Telecel today, attendees were taken aback by an unexpected outburst from an elderly man directed at popular Ghanaian musician Sarkodie. The man, captured in a viral video, expressed his disappointment in Sarkodie for not participating in the traditional act of spraying cash, unlike his counterpart Shatta Wale.

The video, which quickly went viral, showed the elderly man making a direct comparison between Sarkodie and Shatta Wale, praising the latter for his generosity in showering fans with money during public appearances. This incident caused a momentary pause in the proceedings as bystanders looked on in surprise.

The Telecel launch event, which was filled with excitement and anticipation, also marked a significant moment in Ghana’s telecommunications industry. On February 28, 2024, Vodafone Ghana underwent a rebranding transformation to become Telecel Ghana, under the management of Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (GTCL).

This strategic rebranding was made possible by the approval granted by the National Communication Authority (NCA), allowing Telecel to acquire Vodafone Ghana and become the majority shareholder. Despite the Government of Ghana retaining a minority stake of 30% in Telecel, this transition signifies a new era for the telecommunications sector in Ghana.

With a strong presence in the market, Telecel Ghana, formerly Vodafone Ghana, holds an 18% share of the mobile telephony market. Despite the rebranding, the company’s official name remains Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited (GTCL), ensuring the preservation of all licenses and regulatory approvals.

Patricia Obo-Nai, the Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, reassured customers that the transition to Telecel Ghana will not disrupt business operations, network connectivity, or service standards. This transition reflects Vodafone Ghana’s commitment to providing exceptional service to its customers amidst the ever-changing telecommunications landscape in Ghana.

The incident involving Sarkodie and the elderly man at the Telecel launch has sparked discussions online, with many social media users sharing their opinions on the matter.

While Sarkodie has not yet responded to the criticism, Shatta Wale’s reputation for generosity and fan engagement seems to have left a lasting impression on attendees at the event.
