‘Pedophile marries a minor’ – Nana Aba rewrites BBC headline on Wulormo’s marriage to 12-year-old

Renowned media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah, has joined the conversation surrounding the controversial marriage between a 63-year-old chief and a 12-year-old girl.

In a recent X post, Nana Aba condemned the chief as a pedophile and emphasized that the girl in question is a legal minor.

Her reaction was sparked by a headline on the BBC, titled “Outrage as traditional Ghanaian priest, 63, marries 12-year-old girl,” which she quoted and commented on by saying, “Paedophile marries a minor. That should be the headline.”

Authorities have since stepped in, with the police and two ministries – gender and chieftaincy – engaging with stakeholders to address the issue. In a statement released on April 2, 2024, the police reported that the mother and the 12-year-old girl are currently under their protection.

The traditional marriage between Nuumo Borketey Laweh XXXIII and Naa Okromo has sparked public outrage, leading to calls for the chief’s arrest.

Despite the backlash, authorities defended the marriage, citing it as part of their customs and traditions. They explained that the ceremony was meant to prevent other men from pursuing the girl and declared her as a “stool wife.”

However, it is important to note that Ghanaian law prohibits the marriage of individuals under the age of 18.

The video below provides further insight into this controversial issue.
