Renowned musician and politician Rex Omar has outlined plans by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to tackle tax challenges facing Ghana’s entertainment industry in collaboration with the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
During an appearance on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, Omar criticized the GRA’s aggressive tax collection tactics at events, highlighting the need to consider the financial burdens of event organizers.
He described the current approach as unprofessional and inappropriate.
Omar detailed the NDC’s proposed ‘The Black Star Experience’ policy, which aims to strengthen Ghana’s creative arts and culture sector.
He assured that under John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, the party would negotiate tax incentives with Corporate Ghana to support the creative industry.
The musician emphasized the unfairness of taxing event tickets without taking into account the expenses incurred by organizers, even when events do not make a profit.
He also mentioned plans to engage Corporate Ghana in providing tax incentives for companies supporting the creative industry.
In line with the NDC’s commitment to fostering the creative economy for sustainable employment and attracting foreign investment, Omar stated, “Our goal is to grow this industry to export cultural products and attract foreign investment to support our economy.”
While affirming the presence of GRA at events, Omar assured that their authority would be regulated under NDC governance.
John Mahama’s ‘The Black Experience’ initiative, part of the NDC’s campaign, seeks to rejuvenate Ghana’s creative industry through programs like Pan African Month, Ghana Film Festival and Awards Month, Ghanaian Heritage and History Month, Fashion and Food Month, and Diasporan Month.
