Ghanaian playwright George Quaye has recently found himself in the middle of controversy after sharing a photo of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearers Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on Facebook.
The photo was taken at Prempeh’s unveiling on July 9, 2024, and Quaye captioned it as “beautiful,” asking for the photographer’s contact details.
Critics quickly accused Quaye of being affiliated with the NPP due to his post, prompting responses from individuals like former Deputy National Youth Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edem Agbana. Agbana called on Quaye to be transparent about his political leanings.
In response, Quaye clarified that the focus should have been on obtaining the photographer’s contact information, rather than assuming his political allegiance based on a social media post.
He noted that the reactions to his post were largely driven by partisan sentiments, with opposition members expressing outrage, party loyalists showing support, and others prepared to debate differing opinions.
Quaye further emphasized that his political stance is well-known to those familiar with him, and he criticized the notion that everyone should publicly declare their political affiliations. He argued that such decisions are personal and should not be imposed on individuals.
In addressing the criticism, Quaye stated, “Just for clarity, where I stand as far as GH. Politics is concerned has never been in doubt.
Those who know me know it. The fact that you wear yours like armor doesn’t mean everyone should.
What you may call ‘cowardice’ may also be someone’s style. So please stop barking ‘Be Bold Be Bold.’”
