Ghanaian rapper Lyrical Joe has expressed his disappointment over losing the ‘Rapper of the Year’ award at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards.
In an interview with TV3 on May 24, 2024, he stated that his songs, which earned him nominations in the category, met and surpassed the criteria required by the academy.
“I felt cheated because my project that got nominated for the category was exactly what they said they wanted.
“I was the only person with a full ten-minute rap song, different delivery with a full ten-minute quality video, everything that they were looking for, it had it,” he said.
He added that the effort he invested in creating a 10-minute rap song with an accompanying music video should have been sufficient to secure the win.
“Because nowadays nobody wants to rap for more than 3 minutes, so for me to go that mile to constantly wow people for 10 minutes, I deserved it.
“So anytime any song from my 5th August album is nominated and it doesn’t win, I feel cheated,” he said.
Lyrical Joe was nominated for the ‘Best Rap Performance’ category at the 2023 Ghana Music Awards along with Sarkodie, Strongman, and Medikal but lost out to Amerado.
This year, at the 2024 Telecel Ghana Music Awards, Lyrical Joe is in the category once again, hoping to secure the award above other rappers like Sarkodie, Amerado, and Medikal.
