Ed Sheeran, the famous singer-songwriter, was just beginning to learn how to play the guitar when Ipswich Town secured a victory over Middlesbrough in the Premier League back in April 2002.
Fast forward two decades, Sheeran has become a global music sensation, while Ipswich Town found themselves slipping into the third tier of English football.
However, on a recent Sunday in north London, Sheeran was in the crowd to witness his local team achieve their first top-flight win in 22 years. The Tractor Boys, as they are affectionately known, secured the victory with first-half goals from Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap, defeating Tottenham for their first win of the season.
What made this win even more special was that Ipswich Town was sporting their pink third kit for the first time.
This kit was designed in collaboration with Sheeran, who not only became the club’s main shirt sponsor in 2021 but also acquired a minority stake in the club this summer after Ipswich earned back-to-back promotions to return to the Premier League.
After the game, Sheeran joined the players to celebrate the momentous win. His presence seemed to bring some good luck to the team, as they held on to their lead and climbed out of the relegation zone.
Manager Kieran McKenna acknowledged Sheeran’s contribution to the club over the years and credited him with bringing luck to the team. The players were thrilled with the win, knowing the challenges that lie ahead in the Premier League but also cherishing the journey that has brought them to this point.
Ipswich Town’s rise back to the top flight has been a long and challenging one, with many ups and downs along the way.
McKenna highlighted the significance of this win for the club and its supporters, emphasizing the hard work and determination that has brought them to this moment.
