Ghanaian musician George Jahraa has become the latest voice to speak out against illegal mining, also known as galamsey. His concern adds to the growing chorus of protests from various groups in the country who fear the harmful effects of this activity on Ghana’s people.
Religious leaders, prominent figures, and religious bodies have all joined in the call to halt galamsey, which is widespread in many regions of Ghana. In a conversation with JoyNews, Jahraa expressed his frustration at the government’s inaction in the face of continued pollution of the country’s water bodies.
“Illegal mining is a huge problem for successive governments. How can we allow our rivers to turn brown? Some people prioritize their own interests over the health of the nation. But why should we sacrifice the well-being of future generations for temporary gain? It’s time to stop galamsey,” Jahraa emphasized.
In addition to these calls, there have been appeals for creatives to use their platforms to raise awareness about the galamsey issue in their artistic works.
