Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the renowned South African musician who is affectionately known as the “Princess of Africa,” has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to fulfill his promises in the fight against illegal mining activities, popularly known as Galamsey.
During an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Umqombothi hitmaker expressed her concern about the severe impact of illegal mining on the youth, emphasizing that the problem is not unique to Ghana but is a widespread issue affecting many countries, including South Africa.
She urged the government to take decisive action to address this issue and restore Ghana’s deteriorating forest cover and lands.
Yvonne Chaka Chaka, who is currently in Ghana for the African Legends Night event, revealed that there is a Global Citizen meeting scheduled for the following week in Ivory Coast, where she plans to appeal to President Akufo-Addo to prioritize the fight against Galamsey.
She emphasized the importance of President Akufo-Addo translating his words into action, stating, “Young people are saying the solutions are there and all we need now is to see him walking the talk.
We need him to practice what he is preaching so that these minerals can benefit everybody and everybody can get water to drink.”
