Popular media personality Nana Romeo has criticized the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) following the recent arrest of actress Fella Makafui for allegedly selling unregistered body enhancement products.
Romeo expressed his disappointment with the FDA for not properly vetting the products sold by celebrities, leading to misleading claims and ineffective products being marketed to consumers.
He called on the government to hold the FDA accountable and ensure they are more proactive in regulating such products.
Speaking on the E-Forum show with Abrantepa Benefo Buabeng on GhanaWeb TV, Romeo stated, “I’ve consistently pointed out that the slimming concoctions peddled by these celebrities require scrutiny.
Why haven’t they been vetted all this time, given that I’m certain the FDA wouldn’t sanction slimming teas and similar products?”
He also highlighted the impact of Fella Makafui’s arrest on her reputation, especially after reports surfaced of her undergoing a tummy tuck procedure while promoting slimming teas.
Romeo believes this incident will be a lasting stigma for the actress, affecting her credibility when endorsing products in the future.
Fella Makafui was released on bail after being detained for allegedly selling unregistered drugs from her shop in Mempeasem.
Investigative journalist Akwasi Koranteng reported that Fella’s arrest was a result of a six-month surveillance operation monitoring her social media activities on TikTok and Instagram.
Seized items from Fella’s shop included fertility teas, expansion syrups and oils, detox pearls, and sexual vigor teas, all of which were allegedly promoted without the FDA’s approval.
However, Fella’s management has denied claims of her arrest, stating that she was only invited to answer questions regarding the products.
