e-Ananse Library celebrates legendary Ghanaian photojournalist James Barnor

e-Ananse Library recently hosted a grand “Durbar and Cultural Celebration” to pay tribute to the renowned photographer, James Barnor.

James Barnor, the first Ghanaian photojournalist, is widely recognized for his exceptional photography and visual storytelling which have had a significant impact on both traditional and contemporary photography.

Now at the age of 95, James Barnor, who once served as the photographer of the late former President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was honored at the ‘James Barnor at 95 Festival’ held at eAnanase Library in East Legon.

The event was attended by numerous high-profile dignitaries from the art industry, as well as Gyankromah Akufo-Addo, the Director of the Creative Arts Industry and daughter of Ghana’s president.

Notable figures in attendance included Dr. Prof. El Anatsui, Prof. Ablade Glover, Victor Butler, Willie Fugah, Wiz Kudowor, Edem Dei-Tutu representing UNESCO Ghana, Kate Tamakloe (granddaughter of J.K. Bruce-Vanderpuije), and Valentina Mintah, the Founder of e-Ananse Library.

Young fans from various schools also gathered to celebrate the legendary photographer.

During the festivities, guests engaged in hands-on activities, drumming, singing, and a digital photo exhibition showcasing Barnor’s iconic works.

The audience was treated to a poetry recital by Akusika, a high-life music performance by Kwanpa Band, and a cultural performance by Abibigromma.

Additionally, there was an insightful conversation with James Barnor, led by Twinsdntbeg, providing attendees with a glimpse into his illustrious photography career.

In expressing his gratitude, Mr. Barnor commended eAnanse Library for organizing the event in celebration of his life’s work.

His photography career, which spans over six decades, has captured major social, cultural, and political developments in Ghana and England.

As the country’s first photojournalist for Daily Graphic, James Barnor’s contributions to the photography industry are internationally recognized.

e-Ananse Library, established in 2019 by Valentina Mintah, aims to revitalize Ghana’s reading culture and provide access to high-quality contemporary literature and internet-enabled computing facilities.

The library emphasizes African heritage in its design and contents, featuring books primarily by writers of African descent.

The celebration of James Barnor at 95 was a testament to his enduring legacy and the impact of his work on the photography industry in Ghana and beyond.
