Canadian music icon Drake experienced a significant loss of $300,000 after Canada’s national soccer team was defeated 2-0 by Argentina in the Copa America semifinals.
The loss came as a blow to Drake, who had placed a bet with total odds of 9.60, potentially winning him an estimated $2.88 million if Canada had emerged victorious over the reigning world champions, Argentina.
Taking to Instagram, Drake shared his bet slip with a playful caption: “This could get Messi @stake.” This setback marks Drake’s second betting loss this year, following a $565,000 loss in May when Tyson Fury was defeated by Oleksandr Usyk.
Lionel Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, and Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez scored the goals that secured Argentina’s victory at New York’s MetLife Stadium.
Argentina is now set to face the winner of the semifinal clash between Uruguay and Colombia, scheduled for Wednesday, July 10.
The highly anticipated final of the Copa America is penciled in for Sunday, July 14, at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. On the other hand, Canada will contend for third place against the loser of the Uruguay vs. Colombia match.
