Ghanaian playwright and poet Chief Moomen has urged member states of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to fully utilize the Framework for Culture and Arts Education. This policy aims to enhance the teaching of arts and culture in more impactful ways.

Speaking at the UNESCO World Conference on Culture and Arts Education in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on February 17, 2024, Chief Moomen emphasized the importance of arts as a universal language that bridges racial, ethnic, and cultural divides. He called on governments to not only adopt the framework but also actively implement its provisions to help creatives connect through the common language of arts and culture.

The conference, which took place from February 15-17, sought to bring together UN agencies, intergovernmental organizations, and UNESCO partners in the field of culture and education to share innovative practices and ideas aimed at strengthening global alliances for culture and arts education.

The recently adopted UNESCO Framework for Culture and Arts Education is expected to play a crucial role for member states in developing integrated strategies and policies that prioritize the cultural dimension in educational systems. This framework will support investments in nurturing skills and competencies related to culture and arts that meet contemporary needs and opportunities.

Chief Moomen also highlighted ‘The Mansa World’, an initiative that showcases African history and heritage through various forms of content such as theatre and film for global audiences. The project was officially launched at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris on October 18, 2023, with the premiere of the epic theatrical production ‘Mansa Musa and the Trail of Lost Gold (Chapter One)’.

The launch event was attended by esteemed personalities including the UNESCO Director General, UAE Ministers for Tourism, Culture and Foreign Affairs, as well as Education and Culture Ministers from various countries. Chief Moomen’s participation in the conference was part of UNESCO’s efforts to promote ‘The Mansa World’ and gain global recognition for this theatrical project.
