Popular media personality, Bridget Otoo, has taken a swipe at GTV broadcasters, likening them to “sign language interpreters,” in what seems to be a critique of their professionalism.
The comments come in the wake of speculation suggesting that Otoo’s remarks were directed at fellow media personality, Nana Aba Anamoah, following allegations made by businessman Henry Fitz. Fitz claimed to have been in an extramarital affair with Nana Aba Anamoah’s friend, Serwaa Amihere.
The controversy started when GTV Ghana honored one of its female journalists, Akushika Acquaye, who has been with Ghana Broadcasting Corporation since 1995 and rose to the position of Acting Director of Television through hard work.
In a post, GTV described Acquaye as a “Woman of Valour” with competence and character worth emulating by young journalists and women.
In response, a user with the handle @enyonvm raised concerns that the post was a veiled attack on another journalist. While the exact journalist was not identified, some users speculated that it was aimed at Nana Aba Anamoah.
They pointed out that the use of the term “Woman of Valour” seemed intentional, as Nana Aba Anamoah hosts a program called ‘Women of Valour’ to inspire women.
Bridget Otoo joined the conversation, echoing similar sentiments to the aforementioned user. She suggested that GTV presenters taking shots at other presenters stem from personal issues with them, adding that it is not the fault of other journalists if GTV presenters act like sign language interpreters.
An individual with the username @Setho criticized Otoo for her remarks, stating that GTV presenters live within their means and therefore may appear like sign language interpreters.
Despite facing backlash, Bridget Otoo offered what some deemed as an insincere apology, emphasizing that being a sign language presenter is not worthwhile as the main anchor is the focal point for most viewers.
The allegations made against Nana Aba Anamoah by Henry Fitz have led to questions about her morals and the source of her wealth on Twitter. The controversy continues to unfold as social media users speculate on the implications of the accusations.
