The Chief Executive Officer of the Consumer Protection Agency, Kofi Kapito, has raised concerns about media stations promoting gambling by advertising betting brands on their channels. Kapito stated that he will take action against all platforms that allow such advertising.
This comes at a time when the Food and Drugs Authority has directed celebrities to refrain from endorsing alcoholic beverages, a decision that was recently upheld by the Supreme Court after a legal challenge. Kapito emphasized that alcohol consumption, smoking, and gambling are considered vices in society.
He criticized media stations for promoting gambling and betting, stating that these activities can have negative impacts, especially on young people. Kapito highlighted the need for laws to protect vulnerable individuals in society and questioned the effectiveness of media regulatory bodies in Ghana.
Kapito noted the lack of enforcement of regulations in the media industry, citing the airing of inappropriate content during certain hours and the failure of the National Media Commission to address such issues. He commended the FDA’s directive against celebrities endorsing alcohol adverts and urged parents to be vigilant about the content their children are exposed to on television.
In support of the FDA’s decision and the court ruling, Kapito called for collaborative efforts to ensure sanity in the industry. He stressed the importance of protecting young people and maintaining responsible advertising practices.
