One of Ghana’s brightest gospel music stars, Kojo Royal is bent on continuing his mother’s legacy as he announces a plan to build a children’s home filled with God-fearing orphans.
God-fearing parents raised the UK-based Ghanaian singer and instrumentalist. His mother played a sweeping role in discovering his music talent.
Legally known as Richmond Kwadwo Yeboah, the singer’s music journey started when he was only 15. And that was when he had just completed his junior high education at Amankwatia M/A, Kumasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana.
His talent discovery happened on the spur of the moment – it was absolutely unplanned. He had never auditioned at any talent show. His talent at the time was drumming.
“My music journey started when I was 15 years old,” he disclosed in an interview with Ghanafuo.com this week. “I was a drummer, and when we were once praying in church, I picked up the microphone and started singing.”
He said picking up the mic gave him a career he had never dreamed of. He was surprised –his church members who witnessed the beginning of his greatness were stunned, too.
“People were surprised, and that’s how I discovered my gift. I went on to become a choir leader in church and travelled to places to administer the word of God.”
The Kumasi Technical University and Oaklands College graduate cannot appreciate his mother enough but to continue her legacy due to the influential role she played in his life and career. He owes it all to his mother who is his ‘biggest motivation’.
“My mother has been my biggest motivation,” he said. “She never left us out when it comes to church. She would let us skip school for church, especially when it’s important. I received my gift through her devotion and prayers. So, I want to do this to continue her legacy.”
His father and manager can’t be left out of his journey.
“I’ll add my late dad. He wasn’t born a Christian, but my mother won her. He supported me when he became a Christian.
“My manager also deserves credit. He has also motivated me because when he came into the scene, it’s been progress upon progress.”
His mother’s legacy isn’t his only focus. He is committed to using his music as a tool to champion a charity agenda. And it’s just not any charity – it’s one that focuses on raising God-fearing children.
“My mission is to win devoted believers to God with my music. I want to give them some soul-felt music that will draw them closer to God. I want to build a children’s home filled with God-fearing children for different communities,” he concludes.
Kojo Royal also has an annual concert dubbed ‘The Kaporet Experience’ where he gathers fellow gospel stars to win souls for Christ.
He is gearing up to conclude the year with a new powerful single, titled “Wo Ye Onyame.” The single is packed with seasoned producers and top music stars.
