Famous Nigerian Instagram influencer VeryDarkMan has ignited a social media feud over jollof rice after criticising the version he got from a Ghanaian restaurant.
In a video clip, VeryDarkMan can be seen complaining about the lack of flavour in the meal and even attempting to spice it up with water.
His review quickly sparked a debate on social media, with many Ghanaians expressing their displeasure.
Following the video’s release, several Ghanaians took to the comments section to share their thoughts on VeryDarkMan’s critique. Some were quick to criticise him back, while others found humor in the situation.
VeryDarkMan went on to pour water onto the jollof in a bid to improve the taste, but to no avail.
@trustedblog1 Verydarkman visited Ghana 🇬🇭 & finished Ghana🇬🇭 jollof 😳 Ghana jollof 🇬🇭 vs Naija🇳🇬 jollof, my honest observation. VDM eating Ghana🇬🇭 Jollof for the first time… he added water 😢🧐 to see if it wil improve the taste 😮💨 #verydarkman #ghanatiktok🇬🇭 #ghanajollof #ghana #nigeriantiktok🇳🇬
He eventually concluded that Nigerian jollof is better and recommended that Ghanaian chefs could learn a thing or two from a Nigerian Chef who broke the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking hours.
This is not the only time jollof has been the subject of controversy. Hilda Baci, a former Guinness World Record holder, also claimed that Ghana’s jollof lacked flavour during an interview on a UK-based podcast, sparking further debate on the matter. She spoke highly of the jollof from Nigeria but criticised that from Ghana.
This incident goes to show how seriously people take their jollof rice, and it’s clear that the debate is alive and well on social media. Ultimately, the passion for food and culture continues to fuel these discussions.
