A motorbike rider and his pillion rider have been sentenced by the Kaneshie District Court for riding without crash helmets.
The rider, Joshua Kumessa, was also charged for using the motorbike without insurance and riding without a license. Both Kumessa and his pillion rider, Eugene Darko, admitted to the offenses and were sentenced accordingly.
Kumessa was fined 50 penalty units, equivalent to GHC600.00, while Darko was fined 25 penalty units, equivalent to GHC300.00. Failure to pay the fines would result in five weeks in prison for Kumessa and two weeks for Darko.
The offenses occurred on January 14, 2024, at around 1920 hours, when Kumessa was intercepted by the Headquarters Operations Unit of the Ghana Police Service for riding without a crash helmet, insurance certificate, and a rider’s license.
After being arrested and sent to the Airport Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department, it was revealed that Darko, the pillion rider, was also riding without a crash helmet. After investigations, the two were arraigned and later sentenced by the court.
