Ghanaian disc jockey and founder of the DJ Mensah Foundation, Michael Mensah Ayenu, has issued a passionate plea for his fellow DJs to actively champion Ghanaian music on the international stage.
In a recent appearance on Channel One TV’s program “Upside Down,” DJ Mensah highlighted the growing global interest in Ghanaian music, particularly in the UK. He expressed concern that local DJs are not fully meeting this demand and urged them to enhance their efforts in promoting Ghana’s rich musical heritage.
“We must transition our focus from comparing ourselves with other countries to fostering and celebrating Ghana’s unique musical identity,” said DJ Mensah. He pointed out that while there may be a tendency to measure Ghanaian music against its Nigerian counterpart, Ghana has its own distinct strengths.
“I encourage my fellow DJs to elevate Ghanaian music. There’s a significant audience waiting for our sounds, especially abroad,” he emphasized.
He concluded by motivating his peers to prioritize their own music scene: “Let’s stop paying so much attention to what others are doing and concentrate on promoting our talent. We have a story to tell, and it’s time we shared it with the world.”
