The Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP) has expressed support for the recent decision by Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, to establish a committee aimed at reviving the Kumasi movie industry, also known as Kumawood.
The 17-member ministerial committee was inaugurated on March 4 with a mandate to revitalize the declining film industry in the region. With Kumawood facing challenges in recent years, the committee’s main goal is to develop a strategic framework to rejuvenate the industry and create sustainable employment opportunities for industry players.
Chaired by Bishop Ofori-Adu, the committee includes representatives from various sectors of the film industry, including veteran actors Oheneyere Mercy Asiedu and Bill Asamoah. FOCAP sees this initiative as a positive step in boosting the Ghanaian film industry and countering the dominance of foreign films.
FOCAP President, Kojo Preko Dankwa, commended Dr. Amoakohene’s proactive approach and encouraged other regional ministers to take similar measures to support the film and creative arts industries in their respective regions. He emphasized the importance of identifying key challenges within the industry and coming up with strategic solutions to drive growth and transformation.
Dankwa also called on the National Film Authority to play an active role in supporting the industry’s growth. The efforts made by the committee and other stakeholders are expected to contribute significantly to the revival of the industry and ultimately boost the economy.
