The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Movie Awards, Fred Nuamah, recently revealed the reason behind the low publicity for this year’s ceremony.
In an interview with Joy FM’s entertainment journalist, Kwame Dadzie on Showbiz A-Z, Nuamah explained that the decision to keep the event low-key was due to security reasons.
The venue chosen for the event, the Accra International Conference Centre, was also being used as the government’s transition office at the time. This restricted the organizers from making too much noise about the event.
Nuamah stated, “It is a bit political. Unfortunately for us, when we started we didn’t know the government would use the Accra International Conference Centre as their transition office.”
He further mentioned that the limited publicity also impacted the number of attendees at the event, as they decided to focus only on industry insiders. Despite usually using billboards and television ads for promotion, they opted for a more subtle approach this time.
Additionally, Nuamah addressed the criticism the ceremony received for poor organization and the controversial decision to present locally made fans as awards.
The fan plaques, which featured a wooden base with inscriptions and Ghana’s national colors, received mixed reactions.
Nuamah acknowledged the feedback and expressed hope for financial assistance to address the challenges faced by the Ghana Movie Awards.
