Ghanaian circular fashion designer Vera Adu Amaning, also known as AduAmani, is gaining recognition in the United Kingdom for her innovative fashion creations.
A joint project, named ‘Kokoo (Cocoa) 360 Exhibition’, with Adelle A’asante of UK-based company Ese ne Tekyerema CIC, has secured a grant from the British Council Biennales and Festivals Grant.
The £5,000 grant, awarded under the British Council’s Architecture Design Fashion (ADF) program on September 1, 2024, will support the exhibition scheduled for October 25, 2024.
The exhibition, part of the Chocolate Has a Name Festival in Halifax, will showcase fashion pieces made from cocoa jute sacks, emphasizing sustainability and circular economies.
Adelle A’asante, the Creative Director at Ese ne Tekyerema CIC, expressed the exhibition’s aim at challenging the fashion industry’s throwaway culture.
The event emphasizes the transformation of waste materials into high-quality fashion products, promoting a sustainable and circular fashion economy.
All fashion pieces for the exhibition are crafted in Ghana by AduAmani, highlighting the narratives of cocoa farming communities and advocating for sustainable fashion practices.
The exhibition aims to spark a dialogue on the future of fashion by repurposing cocoa sacks, symbolizing a new narrative in the fashion industry.
Ese ne Tekyerema CIC focuses on promoting African arts, culture, and sustainability through innovative projects, while AduAmani is dedicated to repurposing waste materials into high-quality, sustainable fashion items that celebrate African heritage.
