The Armah Institute of Emotional Justice, a global non-profit based in Accra, has launched an innovative project called ‘The Story of Your Name’.

This project aims to explore the significance of names and the impact they have on shaping individual identities, particularly within the Black community.

Throughout the month of September, participants from Ghana, South Africa, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Nigeria, the Caribbean, the UK, and the USA are invited to share their stories through voice notes.

These stories delve into the origins of names, the reasons behind them, and the factors that shape Blackness.

Esther Armah, the CEO of The Armah Institute of Emotional Justice, describes the stories as diverse, touching, and thought-provoking.

Each 3-5 minute voice note provides insights into personal histories, family dynamics, oppression, freedom, healing, and power. The project aims to create an audio map that connects global Black experiences through shared narratives.

‘The Story of Your Name’ is part of a larger initiative called ‘HEALING HARM | HEEDING HISTORY’, which focuses on racial healing and emotional justice for Black people in Africa and the Diaspora.

The project seeks to address untreated traumas and foster a sense of healing and connection within the Black community.

The launch event for ‘The Story of Your Name’ took place in September 2023 at the Library of Africa and the African Diaspora (LOATAD) in Adenta Municipality.

The event featured a blend of drumming, dramatization, and dialogue, with participation from Ghanaian artist Pearl Korkor Darkey and various community organizations.

Sponsored by the Ghana Tourism Authority, The Beyond the Return Secretariat, The African American Association of Ghana, The Ghana Caribbean Association, and Ahaspora, ‘The Story of Your Name’ marks the second year of the HEALING HARM | HEEDING HISTORY initiative.

The project aims to promote Black-on-Black healing and encourage emotional exploration and understanding among African and global Black communities.
