TV3’s New Day co-host Cookie Tee and gospel singer Celestine Donkor found themselves in hot water recently after making controversial comments about Ewe surnames during a live broadcast on TV3.
The incident occurred on an episode of Today’s Woman with Cookie Tee, where Celestine mentioned praying for a husband without a ‘heavy’ Ewe surname, a sentiment that Cookie Tee agreed with. This sparked backlash from some Ghanaians who felt that the comments were derogatory towards the Ewe tribe.
In response to the criticism, Cookie Tee clarified on the New Day Show that the comments were meant as light-hearted banter and were not intended to offend or belittle any community. She apologized, saying, “It was supposed to be an ice breaker to a conversation, it wasn’t supposed to be taken the way it was. This morning, sincerely from my heart, I just want to apologize to all of you, it was a joke that went bad.”
Similarly, Celestine Donkor took to social media to express regret, emphasizing that the remarks were made in jest and not meant to disrespect the Ewe tribe, of which she is proud.
