Why is Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas closing?

The Tropicana Hotel’s reign in Las Vegas is set to come to an end after 67 years in business. This iconic staple in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be closing its doors to make way for a new MLB stadium, as reported by NPR.

The closure of the Tropicana Hotel, located on Las Vegas Boulevard, is part of the redevelopment plan to accommodate the Oakland A’s, who announced their relocation to Las Vegas in November 2023. The Tropicana Hotel, which opened in 1957, was once considered the most luxurious resort in the city, known for hosting the city’s longest-running show, the Folies Bergère cabaret.

Over the years, the resort has lost its appeal and fallen out of fashion, changing ownership multiple times before being sold for $308 million in 2022. Despite its historical significance, the Tropicana Hotel has struggled to compete with more modern and profitable competitors like the Wynn and the Bellagio.

The Tropicana’s Blue Room venue was a hub for jazz performances in the 1960s, and magicians Siegfried and Roy made their Las Vegas debut at the resort. However, with changing trends and preferences among tourists, the hotel has failed to keep up with the evolving entertainment landscape of Las Vegas.

The official closing date for the Tropicana Hotel is set for Tuesday, April 2, 2024. The hotel’s owner, Bally’s Corporation, announced that the demolition will begin in October 2024 to pave the way for the construction of the proposed 30,000-seat MLB stadium for the Athletics.

Bally’s Corporation, a leading entertainment company specializing in gaming and betting, acquired the Tropicana Hotel in 2022. Known for its dedication to creating thrilling gaming experiences, Bally’s Corporation aims to continue providing top-notch entertainment for its customers.
