The North East Regional Minister, Yidana Zakaria, has indicated that there will be an increase in the deployment of Police personnel to the region following a surge in robbery attacks in Walewale and its surrounding areas.

In the wake of a robbery attack on Monday, resulting in the death of one person and eight others sustaining injuries, the Minister mentioned that there will be a new arrangement with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to address the situation.

During a visit to the survivors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, the Regional Minister assured the public of an expedited search to arrest the culprits responsible for the attack, describing it as a deliberate and extreme act beyond the typical definition of armed robbery.

The armed robbery incident involved three men on motorbikes who opened fire at a busy bus station near the Nalerigu Junction and then targeted a mobile money vendor. The vendor was shot as he tried to escape, and eight other people at the bus station were wounded by stray bullets.

All the victims received treatment at the Walewale Government Hospital but were then transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where the mobile money operator, identified as Rabiu, was pronounced dead.

This attack comes in the midst of increasing reports of robberies across the municipality, with police sources indicating that close to 30 robbery attacks have been recorded since the start of the year. The deployment of additional police personnel is seen as a critical measure to combat and prevent further attacks in the region.
