In a bid to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the staff of Standard Chartered have taken part in a volunteering activity with 100 female students from Labone and Accra High Senior High Schools.

The activity involved a speed mentoring session, in line with the global theme “Women and Girls in Science Leadership, a New Era for Sustainability”.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, established by the United Nations, aims to acknowledge the critical role played by women and girls in the field of science and technology. Standard Chartered, as part of this, created an enabling environment to celebrate its achievements and encourage the growth of women and girl scientists.

This volunteering activity is in line with Futuremakers by Standard Chartered, the Bank’s global youth economic empowerment initiative which seeks to support disadvantaged young people, especially women and people with disabilities, to learn, earn, and grow.

During the mentoring session, a STEM competition was held with two girl teams from Accra High School and Labone Secondary School. The challenge was to deliver a digital solution to managing, tracking, and saving for teenagers. This competition was aimed at sparking interest in STEM careers among young girls in senior high schools in Ghana.

The winner of the competition was Labone Senior High School, and they were presented with a Smart TV for the school’s ICT laboratory. This effort is commendable as it encourages young girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, thus opening up opportunities for them in the future.
