Kit Harington says Jon Snow ‘Game of Thrones’ spinoff is no longer in development

In a recent interview with ScreenRant promoting his movie “Blood for Dust,” Kit Harington revealed that the much-anticipated “Game of Thrones” spinoff centered around Jon Snow is no longer in development at HBO.

This news comes after speculation erupted in June 2022 when reports surfaced that Harington was set to reprise his role as Jon Snow in the spinoff series.

The initial idea for the spinoff came from Harington himself, as author George R.R. Martin confirmed in a blog post. However, despite bringing in a talented team of writers and showrunners, including his own team, Harington explained to ScreenRant that they ultimately couldn’t find the right story to tell, leading to the project being shelved for the time being.

Fans had eagerly anticipated the spinoff series to potentially explore Jon Snow’s adventures with the Wildlings after his exile from Westeros at the end of “Game of Thrones.” Actor Liam Cunningham, who played Sir Davos Seaworth on the original series, even expressed his eagerness to join the spinoff but is now relieved with the news that it is no longer happening.

Although the Jon Snow spinoff may not be moving forward, HBO is not done with the “Thrones” universe. Season 2 of “House of the Dragon” is set to return this summer, and a new spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight” is currently in production. Based on the “Tales of Dunk and Egg” books by Martin, the series has already announced its main cast members, with Peter Claffey cast as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell cast as Egg.

While fans may be disappointed about the cancellation of the Jon Snow spinoff, there is still plenty to look forward to in the expanding “Thrones” universe on HBO and its streaming service Max. Additionally, Harington’s latest film, “Blood for Dust,” is set to premiere in theaters and on digital platforms on April 19.
