U2 recently concluded a 40-show residency at Las Vegas‘ $2.3 billion Sphere. The band paid tribute to their iconic 1991 album, Achtung Baby, by performing it in its entirety, along with selected tracks from other U2 albums. During the final performance, U2 welcomed Achtung Baby producer Daniel Lanois on stage to play guitar and sing backup on the track “One.”

The band also acknowledged drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who was absent due to illness, with Bono expressing gratitude for Mullen’s pivotal role in the band’s formation. The audience was treated to a heartwarming moment as cameras panned to Mullen in a VIP box, receiving cheers and chants of his name.

During the performance of “All I Want Is You,” Bono dedicated the song to all women, including First Lady Jill Biden, who was in attendance. The audience erupted in cheers, recognizing Biden’s presence and the significance of the dedication.

The show also featured appearances by VIP guests like Lenny Kravitz, Dave Grohl, and Brett Ratner. U2 closed out the residency with a performance of “40,” marking the 40th show and reflecting on the significance of the number in their career.

Bono also highlighted the band’s support for Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, dedicating a performance to his widow, Yulia. The band encouraged the audience to record the special rendition of the Crowded House hit “Don’t Dream It’s Over” in support of freedom and the fight for a free Russia.

After the successful residency, U2 is focusing on an upcoming rock-heavy album. The Sphere will host upcoming events by Dead & Company, Phish, and a special immersive film experience by Darren Aronofsky.
